BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

One cannot deny the significant influence that radio and television campaigns have had on the cultism that exists in Nigeria. Instead, it has garnered sufficient respect in our society and outside as a result of the amount to which college cultism is expanding in Nigeria. As observed by Omenazu(2016), this recognition has spread beyond Nigeria. Tertiary institution of learning is worrisome, and every year it always manages to get a firm grasp on the hearts of Nigerian students. These students live their lives with one eye closed and the other eye wide awake in alert. anything in the name of preventing oneself from becoming a victim of the threat. Since the formation of a secret cult in Nigeria by the same group of people led by professor Oluwole Soyinka, who believe that it would be used to propagate a peculiar idea, while every one of their plans is kept a secret without revealing it to anyone at this time, the story has undergone a significant transformation. The once-secret-keeping deity has now morphed into a hidden cult of blood, and it has become so pervasive that it has spread to the same basic and secondary schools across Nigeria (Godwin 2017).

According to Godwin (2017), The spread of cultism in Nigeria has reached a new level, and the federal government, in collaboration with the country's parents, educators, and other institutions, has made a significant amount of effort to either eliminate or bring the problem under control. It should come as no surprise that the desire for power, one's social circle, and one's family history are the primary elements that contribute to its development. On June 8, 2016, there was a fight in Makurdi that resulted in so much death. According to reports, around seven members of a cult were slain in federal university of agriculture Makurdi, and three female students were raped during the conflict. Cultism has evolved into a danger that poses a risk to the health and safety of everyone in society, including the students at the Federal University of Agriculture. There has always been a spill-over of tension between the academic atmosphere and the streets in Makurdi; cultism has become something of an inherited tradition in the Makurdi local government of Benue State.

As a direct result of cult operations, the Federal University of Agriculture has been the site of a number of different strikes between the years of 2012 and 2016. According to (Nsidibe R. (2016).  it has been mentioned that it has been conjectured that sufficient attempts have been put in by Nigerians regarding the battle against cultism; nonetheless, the efforts prove to be fruitless. It has been observed that the involvement of students in cult activities has an influence not only on the academic achievement of the students but also on the lives of the students. Because of the danger posed by the cult, students would rather go a great distance away from the school than remain in the area.

In this particular scenario, radio and television have a significant part to play in the battle against this dangerous beast in the state of Ebonyi. On the other hand, none of the other media outlets are ignored. One can only rely on the radio and television in order to reduce the prevalence of cultism in our midst. This is due to the fact that both mediums broadcast all programs, advertisements or jingles, and other things that could give the youths food for thought, and they all reach every nook and cranny of the country in the process of information dissemination.
